Ekta Parishad ( Hindi :; German: "Solidarischer Bund") is an Indian grassroots social movement that was founded in 1991 with the aim of fighting for the rights of the oppressed rural population according to the principles of non-violence of Mohanda Gandhi . The most important goals of the movement are land reforms , the end of displacement and functioning conflict resolution bodies for existing land conflicts.

history

After India gained independence from the British Crown, land ownership was concentrated to a few owners ( zamindars ). Despite some land reforms , there are still many subsistence farmers without land. Movements for land reform in individual states from the 1970s then came together in 1991 to found Ekta Parishad. The founder and current head of Rajagopal PV had previously campaigned for Adivasi , Dalit and slave labor ( debt bondage ) several times .

From the beginning, marches have been a central element of Ekta Parishad's action. In the first few years, activities were limited to the states of Madhya Pradesh , Orissa and Bihar . From December 1999 to June 2000 there was a great march which, according to Ekta Parishad, mobilized over 300,000 people and resulted in around 350,000 land titles being given to the landless and over 550,000 charges of forest use being dropped.

On October 2, 2007, Gandhi's 138th birthday , another march began from Gwalior to New Delhi , India's capital, where the peasants demonstrated in front of the presidential palace. As a result, a National Land Reform Committee was established, 50% of which is made up of representatives from the social land reform movement.
