Ekwow Spio-Garbrah (* 1953 in Ghana ) is Director General of the Commonwealth Telecommunications Organization (CTO) in London and a leading Ghanaian politician . After many years of experience in the diplomatic service for Ghana, Spio-Garbrah held various ministerial offices in Ghana's government under John Jerry Rawlings .

education

Spio-Garbrah studied English literature at the University of Ghana in Legon , a district of Accra, and graduated with a BA (Hons.) At the age of 19. He also studied journalism and communication at the University of Ghana and graduated with a diploma. At Ohio University in the USA , he also completed a degree in International Affairs , which he completed with a master's degree. He graduated from New York University with a certificate in international banking and finance .

Career in business

Spio-Garbrah has worked as a banker in the mortgage department in New Jersey, as a seller of Southwestern Bell and head of the Middle East Africa Group in the international public relations firm Hill & Knowlton, New York.

Between 1988 and 1991 Spio-Garbrah worked in various positions at the International Finance Corporation in Washington, USA. He then became “Head of Communications” at the African Development Bank between 1991 and 1994 before moving to the diplomatic service for Ghana. In Ghana, Spio-Garbrah founded his own consulting firm (Spio-Garbrah & Associates) and worked as a consultant to various commercial companies before he became General Director of the Commonwealth Telecommunications Organization (CTO) in London in 2003.

Career as a politician

Spio-Garbrah was ambassador for Ghana to the USA and Mexico between 1994 and 1997 . As ambassador to the USA, he played a key role in building bilateral relations between the two countries. Spio-Garbrah's work culminated in a state visit by President Bill Clinton to Ghana in 1998.

During the tenure of President Jerry Rawlings , Spio-Garbrah was a member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and led various ministries. In 1997 and 1998 he was Minister of Communications (Minister or Communications). In this position he was responsible for the expansion of the Internet, radio and telecommunications in Ghana.

He was then Minister for Education from 1998 to 2001. He was also Minister for Mines & Energy in 1999. After the end of Rawlings' reign and the formation of the opposition government under John Agyekum Kufuor , Spio-Garbrah continued his private career, but remained one of the leading opposition politicians in Ghana in his NDC party to this day.

For the presidential elections in 2008, Sipo-Garbrah was considered one of the most promising candidates for the candidacy of his party NDC in the elections. His candidacy was not without controversy.

Honors

In May 2001, Spio-Garbrah was awarded an honorary doctorate in law (Honoris Causa) from Middlebury College in Vermont, USA for his merits in education, communication and diplomacy.
