Elżbieta Drużbacka (born Kowalska, 1695-1699; died on 14. March 1765 in Tarnów ) was a Polish poet of the late Baroque .

Life

Most of the biographical data about Elżbieta Drużbacka are known only from her numerous letters. She was born in the noble Kowalski family. In her youth she stayed for a long time at the court of Elżbieta Sieniawska, née Lubomirski, wife of Adam Mikołaj Sieniawski , Krakow Castellan and Grand Hetman of the Polish Crown . There she received a thorough education and probably met her future husband Kazimierz Drużbacki, a Jewish treasurer whom she married around 1720.

The Drużbacki family had two daughters: Marianna, Wojciech Wiesiołowski's wife and Anna. After her husband's death in 1740, Elżbieta Drużbacka became her daughter's housekeeper, and later she lived with the noble families of Czartoryski , Lubomirski , Krasicki and finally Sanguszko . After the death of her older daughter and six grandchildren in 1760, she settled in the Monastery of the Saint Bernard Sisters in Tarnów, which was founded by Prince Paweł Karol Sanguszko and his wife Barbara Urszula Sanguszkowa , née Dunin, and where she died on March 14, 1765 .

At first, Elżbieta Drużbacka's works only reached the readers in copies. The poet's manuscripts kept in the Krasiński Library were destroyed during the Warsaw Uprising .

Elżbieta Drużbacka's work was highly valued by Udalryk Krzysztof Radziwiłł , Ignacy Krasicki and Hugo Kołłątaj . She was distinguished by an unusual naturalness, simplicity of style and purity of language.

Judy Chicago dedicated an inscription to Elżbieta Drużbacka on the triangular floor tiles of the Heritage Floor of her installation The Dinner Party . The porcelain tiles labeled with the name Elizabeth Druzbacka are assigned to the place with the place setting for Emily Dickinson .
