El Astillero is a Spanish municipality in the autonomous region of Cantabria . The community had 18,111 inhabitants in 2019.

Geographical location

The municipality is located on the bay of Santander at the foot of the Peña Cabarga mountain . El Astillero is agglomerated with the regional capital Santander and is not far from Santander Airport . In addition to the city center, the municipality of Guarnizo, 1.5 km to the west, is part of the municipality . The industrial area "Morero" is located between the two villages.

economy

In the past, the city was characterized by industrial companies that processed raw materials obtained from the mines in the nearby Cantabrian Mountains . As in many other regions of Europe, however , the importance of mining in northern Spain has decreased significantly in recent decades. Thanks to a successful reform policy, however, it has been possible to keep the areas of the former heavy industry as intact industrial and commercial areas and to locate new companies there. These are mainly medium-sized companies that produce different types of products. In El Astillero there are jobs industry over 2000, and 28.2% are employed all workers in the industrial sector.

In the city center there are two train stations along the narrow-gauge railway line of the FEVE railway company that connects Santander with Bilbao : El Astillero and La Cantábrica . In Guarnizo is a station on the railway Santander - Palencia , the trains of the national railway RENFE is operated. There is a commuter train service to Santander on both routes .

There is a well-developed road connection via Camargo to Santander via the S-10 city ​​motorway .

Santander Airport is in close proximity to the city.
