El Cotillo is a place in La Oliva , the northernmost community of about Spain belonging Canary Island Fuerteventura . El Cotillo has 1,457 inhabitants (2017) and is located about 25 kilometers northwest of the island's capital Puerto del Rosario .
history
In the 17th century, El Cotillo was called Puerte del Toston . Initially, El Cotillo was an important trading port in the Canary Islands. Due to reefs in the area of the port entrance, however, trade increasingly shifted to other ports, but the use as a fishing port remained. To protect the port from pirates, the defense tower Torre del Tostón was built on a cliff on the southern edge of the town in 1743 . In the 20th century, a new port was built just south of the old port.
region
The Faro de Tostón lighthouse is located about four kilometers north of the town, at the northwest corner of Fuerteventura called Punta de Toston o de la Ballena . Below the cliff of the Castillo de Roque there is a sandy beach about one kilometer long. Nine kilometers east of the village, the Calderón Hondo volcano, accessible via a paved hiking trail, towers over the desert-like landscape northeast of El Cotillo.

El Cotillo is mainly visited by surfers, as there are some surfing and kite surfing schools there. Cotillo Beach is suitable for beginners. Furthermore, Cotillo offers a reef with waves for advanced surfers and has a direct connection to the so-called "North Track", where you can find numerous surf spots. There are also some restaurants in El Cotillo.
