The El Dorado Refinery (English: El Dorado Refinery ) by Coastal Corporation was an American refinery in El Dorado ( Butler County ) in the state of Kansas . It was shut down in 1993 due to unprofitability. It is not to be confused with the El Dorado refinery by Holly Frontier , which is also located in El Dorado.
history
The refinery was built in 1917 for the Pest Refining Company . Petro Atlas took over the refinery in 1958 and sold it to the Fina Oil and Chemical Company after just six months . The refinery remained with the Fina Oil and Chemical Company until 1977 . From 1977 to 1985 the refinery was again part of the Pester Refining Company . Due to the bankruptcy of the Pester Company on February 25, 1985, the refinery had to be shut down the following March. After more than a year, the refinery and its premises were taken over by the Coastal Company on April 10, 1986.
As the refining business accumulated ever greater losses, the Coastal's El Dorado Refinery and Derby Refinery were shut down.
Until September 2004, asphalt was still processed on the site and a terminal was operated. The area with the still existing asphalt operation and the terminal was added to the El Paso Corporation in 2001 through the takeover of the Coastal Corporation . From 2004 to 2010, the remaining facilities of the former refinery were demolished and the site renovated. With the takeover of El Paso, the wasteland has belonged to Kinder Morgan since 2012 .
