El Nacional is a Venezuelan daily newspaper with a traditional left-liberal orientation. The paper appears daily, including Sundays. Its daily circulation is around 100,000 from Monday to Saturday and around 250,000 on Sundays (as of January 2010).

El Nacional was founded in Caracas in August 1943 and is now run by Manuel Sucre and Miguel Henrique Otero , son of Miguel Otero Silva and grandson of the founder of the newspaper Henrique Otero Vizcarrondo .

The first director was the poet Antonio Arráiz (1903–1962). In addition, many well-known Venezuelan writers participated. For example, one of the country's best-known intellectuals, Arturo Uslar Pietri , wrote an opinion column in the paper for more than fifty years .

The political orientation is moderately left, for which it has been criticized by previous governments under the parties AD and COPEI .

Towards the end of the 20th century, the paper campaigned for Hugo Chávez to stand for candidacy , but after the radicalization of Chavez's policies, it is more critical of the government.

There is a digital edition of El Nacional, which was first published in 1996 and can be subscribed to for an annual fee.

In 2000, the paper joined the Grupo de Diarios América (Spanish for the group of American newspapers ) ( GDA ), which includes the Latin American publications El Tiempo ( Colombia ), El Mercurio ( Chile ), La Nación ( Argentina ) .

On October 27, 2013 El Nacional had to temporarily stop its print edition due to a lack of paper. Due to government foreign exchange controls, Venezuela's newspapers that do not report on the government line are rarely given the necessary foreign exchange for the import of printing paper.

In 2017 abc.es had written that El Nacional was one of the few newspapers that could still have withstood the "wild attacks of the regime against freedom of expression", on December 14, 2018 the newspaper published its last paper edition as it was not on paper by the regime got; Even the website was not available to Venezuelans at the beginning of February 2019 because it was "not acceptable to the power apparatus".
