El Universal is a Colombian regional newspaper which is published in the Caribbean coastal city of Cartagena de Indias and is widely read all over the Caribbean coastal region of Colombia . It was started on September 1, 1948 by Domingo López Escauriaza and Eduardo Ferrer Ferrer and is close to the Liberal Party of Colombia .

The newspaper appears daily on 28 to 30 pages, on Sundays with some supplements, with the segments municipal, politics, education, sport, entertainment and technology. Today the paper is without a doubt the leading newspaper in the Caribbean region , with full coverage of Cartagena and the rest of the Bolívar , Sucre and Cordoba departments . El Universal has editorial offices in Bogotá , Barranquilla and Medellín .
The writer and Nobel Prize winner in literature Gabriel García Márquez was one of the editors of the newspaper from the beginning.
