Elaine Nancy Aron (born Spaulding; * 1944 in California ) is an American psychologist and non-fiction author, mainly on the subject of high sensitivity . Her book The Highly Sensitive Person: How to Thrive When the World Overwhelms You is now considered a standard work in this field.

Life

Elaine Aron graduated from the University of California, Berkeley , and York University in Toronto with a Master of Arts in Clinical Psychology . During her internship at the CG Jung Institute in San Francisco , she obtained a Doctor of Philosophy in Clinical Depth Psychology at the Pacifica Graduate Institute in Santa Barbara .

In 1996 Aron began to investigate the topic of high sensitivity , for which she is considered a pioneer today, and coined the term Sensory Processing Sensitivity (SPS).

After an operation in 1997, which upset her emotionally, the doctors prescribed psychological treatment. Because the doctors could not diagnose any pathological syndromes, she was simply described as "highly sensitive". Together with her husband Arthur Aron (* 1945), also a psychologist, ten years later she described the scientifically controversial construct of high sensitivity based on case studies. She still runs a small psychotherapy practice in Mill Valley, California today (as of 2015) and lives with her husband in Tiburon , near San Francisco . Her son Elijah Aron is a screenwriter .

Act

The research results of a 1995 survey published in 1996 in its over a million copies sold book The Highly Sensitive Person: How to Thrive When the World Overwhelms You (German: The Highly Sensitive How do you recognize your sensitivity, understand and use? ), The today is considered the standard work on this subject. It has been translated into over 70 languages.

Elaine Aron coined the terms highly sensitive and highly sensitive person . The high sensitivity and its forms of expression and consequences for those affected made her her research focus, which accompanied her throughout her life. As their research has shown, high sensitivity is not a disease, but a genetic trait. However, it does not rule out that a small proportion of the highly sensitive people have acquired the high sensitivity in the course of their life through trauma or constant stress. Her thesis that over 20 percent of people are highly sensitive is still controversial today - both in scientific and therapeutic areas.
