Elaine Noble

Elaine Noble (born January 22, 1944 in New Kensington , Westmoreland County , Pennsylvania ) is a former American politician ( Democratic Party ). She sat in the Massachusetts House of Representatives for two election cycles from January 1975 . She was the first openly lesbian politician ever to be elected at the state level in America.

Studies and Careers

Noble studied at Boston University , Emerson College, and Harvard University . Before going into politics, she worked as a language teacher and head of an advertising department. She was involved in the gay movement in Boston . In 1974 she was elected to the State House of Representatives with 59% . Their inauguration took place on New Year's Day 1975 and was made by Governor Michael Dukakis . She was the first openly lesbian candidate to be elected at the state level in the United States and the second (after Nancy Wechsler ) to be elected to public office.

In March 1977, she was part of the first gay and lesbian delegation invited to the White House by President Jimmy Carter to discuss community issues. After serving two terms in the House of Representatives, she worked for Kevin White , then Boston mayor. In 1980 she ran for the US Senate , but drew the short straw to Paul Tsongas within the Democratic Party . In the 1990s she ran unsuccessfully for Cambridge City Council . In 1986, Noble co-founded a treatment center called the Pride Institute in Minneapolis with Ellen Ratner for gays and lesbians with alcohol and drug problems.

Private life

Noble was dating Rita Mae Brown in the 1970s . Since then, she has not spoken out publicly about her private life. She currently lives in Florida.
