The Lightship Elbe 3 in 1888 as a lightship Weser at the shipyard of Johann Lange in Vegesack built. The first use was on position Weser from 1889. In 1936 the ship received a four-stroke marine diesel engine. Instead of the middle mast, the ship has a chimney. From 1954 to 1955 and 1956 to 1966 the ship was in service on position Bremen, and from 1966 to 1977 on position Elbe 3. Elbe 3 was a lightship position northwest of Cuxhaven and northeast of Neuwerk in one of the main shipping lanes of the German Bight . The beacon consisted of three electrically operated individual lights. The decommissioning was on May 23, 1977 in Cuxhaven.

The ship has been in the Oevelgönne museum harbor in Hamburg since 1979 and is kept in working order by a volunteer crew from the association. Visits are possible on Wednesdays and Saturdays and on request. Guest trips are made in summer. The ship is considered to be the world's oldest operational lightship.

The former lightship or beacon ship Weser , today ELBE 3 , was named after its last position. There is another lightship called Elbe 3 . Since May 1967 this ship, the mayor Abendroth , has been part of the floating fleet of the Bremerhaven Museum Harbor.
