Primeo Energie is a Swiss energy supply company based in Münchenstein , which was founded in 1897 as the Elektra Birseck Münchenstein (EBM) cooperative, which is organized under private law. The company develops energy solutions for private and business customers, energy supply companies, cities and municipalities. The company supplies over 170,000 customers with energy in Switzerland and France. Business areas are energy, grid, heating and renewable energies. Primeo Energie is active along the entire value chain, from production and trading to distribution and sales.

history

The engineer Fritz Eckinger and the politician Stephan Gschwind founded Elektra Birseck Münchenstein in 1897 with the intention of introducing electrical lighting and the then new idea of a cooperative organizational form . The supply area in the lower part of the canton of Basel-Landschaft and the Solothurn part of Birseck-Dorneck was soon expanded. Between 1906 and 1914, EBM connected eleven municipalities and the city of Saint-Louis (Haut Rhin) to the supply network. In June 2016, a consortium made up of EBM, Städtische Betriebe Olten (sbo) and UBS Clean Energy Infrastructure Switzerland (UBS-CEIS) jointly took over Aare Vertriebs AG (AVAG) from Alpiq. Primeo Energie has been ensuring the power supply, operation and customer care in the 17 AVAG communities in the Olten region since January 2019 . Primeo Energie supplies a total of 77 municipalities with electricity in the two Swiss cantons of Basel-Landschaft and Solothurn as well as in Alsace, France.

Primeo Energie (formerly EBM) was the first company in Switzerland to promote the economical and rational use of energy from 1979 onwards. Primeo Energie is making initial provisions to promote renewable energies and is setting up an energy and environmental advice center for customers. For decentralized heat supply, Primeo Energie developed the concept of “ block-type thermal power station and heat pump ” at the beginning of the 1980s and built the first block-type thermal power station in 1982.

The company has been building, promoting and participating in photovoltaic systems since 1992 in order to be able to offer solar power at low cost. On the occasion of its 100th anniversary in 1997, Primeo Energie opened an electricity museum in Münchenstein.

In 2009, EBM will start producing electricity from wind and solar power. The company aravis founded Aravis Energy I LP in order to implement large systems in southern Europe . This is the first Swiss Limited Partnership ( limited partnership for collective capital investments) that was approved by the Swiss Federal Banking Commission. Projects with a volume of 200 million Swiss francs were developed with the fund. EBM has signed 70 million francs as the main investor. With the investment made by EBM, wind parks and photovoltaic systems in Italy and Spain with an installed capacity of around 64 megawatts could be realized.

In order for electric cars a unified network of charging stations to build, EBM in June 2017 together with the energy services Alpiq , EWB and Groupe E , the MOVE Mobility AG founded. In Switzerland, MOVE has more than 800 of its own charging stations, and thousands more can be used throughout Europe.

In cooperation with BLT (Baselland Transport AG) and Basler Kantonalbank (BKB), the Pick-e-Bike sharing system for e-bikes and e-scooters was set up in 2018 . The vehicles can be used with an app. Pick-e-Bike has established itself in a short time and has over 15,000 customers.

To increase efficiency in the data-to-cash process to generate (from the energy data to collections), EBM has with electricity companies of the Canton of Zurich (EKZ) and Romande Energie , the company enersuisse founded and brought to the market as of January 1 of 2019. In the new company, the three partners are pooling their know-how in order to improve their customer service and their efficiency. With almost 900,000 billing customers, it is the largest service company in the Swiss energy sector.

Since the end of March 2019, EBM has been operating under the new name Primeo Energie in order to better position itself in the national market.

Corporate form

Primeo Energie is organized as a private law cooperative . The supreme body is the EBM cooperative Elektra Birseck. The members of the cooperative are legal and private persons who own property and are connected to the Primeo Energie grid. In 2018, the company said it had over 54,000 members.

Main shareholder at aventron AG

With aventron , Primeo Energie is on a growth path in renewable energies . Overall, the company was able to eightfold sales between 2013 and 2018. aventron plans and operates hydro , wind and solar power plants in Switzerland, Germany, France, Italy, Spain and Norway. The portfolio achieved around 476 megawatts (MW) of installed capacity in 2018. Aventron produced a total of 786 million kilowatt hours of clean electricity. Because the originally set target of 500 MW (by 2019) is already within reach, aventron is planning to build a diversified and balanced portfolio of renewable energies with a total installed capacity of 1000 megawatts in the medium term. On April 3, 2018, EBM Greenpower AG and ewb Natur Energie AG contributed all of the titles they held in aventron AG to the newly founded aventron Holding AG. Aventron Holding AG holds the majority of the equity interests in aventron with 62 percent. Other aventron shareholders, who directly own more than three percent of the shares, are Stadtwerk Winterthur, UBS Clean Energy Infrastructure Fund II, Reichmuth Infrastructure Switzerland and Gebäudeversicherung Bern. Primeo Wärme AG

The Primeo heat AG is in Switzerland for over 35 years in the heating contracting business. The focus is on the use of renewable energies. Initially, primarily heating networks were implemented in the Swiss network area by Primeo Energie, today Primeo Energie is represented throughout Switzerland by Primeo Thermique SAS in neighboring Alsace with a total of 214 systems (as of 2017).

ARA Morgental energy park

One of the first energy parks in Switzerland is being built in the Morgental sewage treatment plant, which ensures wastewater treatment for eight municipalities in the cantons of Thurgau and St. Gallen. The sewage treatment plant turns from an energy consumer into a producer of electricity and heat. Under the leadership of Primeo Energie in this project, the plant produces electricity and heat from sewage gas, waste water and wood chips and thus supplies customers in Steinach , Arbon and the surrounding area. In addition, Primeo Energie is building a wood power plant.

Biomass heating center, district heating network Saint-Louis

The Primeo Thermique SAS operates in Saint-Louis in France, a new combined cycle power plant that produces biomass heat and electricity for thousands of households. The entire system was planned, implemented and financed by the French Primeo Energie subsidiary. This saves fossil fuels and reduces CO 2 emissions by 9,000 tons per year. For the project, the city of Saint-Louis and 20 other cities received the Grand prix national des villes award in the management of natural resources and energy category . On the initiative of the city of Saint-Louis, Primeo Thermique SAS took over the municipal district heating network and modernized it in sections in July 2011. With a total length of 7.5 kilometers, the association supplies 3,000 apartments with heating and hot water. Around 34,000 megawatt hours of thermal energy are required each year. The biomass heating center was officially inaugurated on October 18, 2013.
