Stephan Gschwind

Stephan Gschwind (born April 22, 1854 in Therwil ; † April 28, 1904 in Oberwil ) was an entrepreneur, benefactor and politician ( BAB / SP ).

Gschwind was a member of the district administrator from 1887 to 1904, and in 1900/01 he was its president. After the parliamentary elections in 1899 he was a member of the National Council until his death .

Together with Eduard Heinis, Gschwind was one of the founders of the Farmers' and Workers' Union in 1892. He founded the girls' secondary school, the women's association, the Elektra Birseck and Baselland, the brickworks and the shovel factory. He initiated the construction of water supplies, roads and the Basel – Rodersdorf railway line . His most important work was the Oberwil production and consumer cooperative founded in 1892, which after two years was expanded into Birseck's production and consumer cooperative and later merged with Coop Basel and Coop (Switzerland) .
