An electric cart , also known as an electric cart or an electric platform truck, is a motor vehicle that is equipped with an electric motor and accumulators and is primarily used to transport material on a flat loading surface behind the driver. The electric cart is primarily used for internal or other short-distance transport tasks. The driver sits like in a motor vehicle or he stands on a pedestal, usually a second person can ride. Vehicles that were previously common for stationary driving are controlled by two hand levers or a foot rocker.

The vehicles reach only low speeds and are usually used only on flat roadways, therefore carrying wheels often solid rubber tires and are unsprung.

In the past, a direct, mechanically switched DC motor was used as the motor ; today, maintenance-free three - phase motors with converters are used. The motor is also used as a brake . Ranges of up to 70 km and payloads of up to five tons are common. The most important providers in the Federal Republic are Still , Mafi and Volk.

The vehicles are often used for transport purposes where car traffic is forbidden, such as on some of the car-free North Sea islands, for example Wangerooge or Helgoland , where they have the vehicle registration number AG (for "exceptional approval"). They are also used at train stations and airports , where they use trailers to transport luggage between the posting and unloading points.
