Electrotechnical Association

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The first Electrotechnical Association was founded on December 20, 1879 by Werner von Siemens and the Imperial Postmaster General Heinrich von Stephan in Berlin together with 34 other high-ranking representatives from universities, industry, the imperial post office and the military. The first ordinary meeting took place on January 27, 1880. Werner von Siemens was elected as chairman and Heinrich von Stephan as honorary chairman. The specialist journal Elektrotechnische Zeitschrift (ETZ) appeared for the first time in the same year. The Berlin Electrotechnical Association was the first in the world to deal with all areas of electrical engineering . His self-imposed tasks consisted in the development and promotion of the technical application of electricity as well as in the maintenance of the scientific basis. The founding of the Berlin Electrotechnical Association marks the birth of electrical engineering as a separate branch of technology. In a letter Werner von Siemens wrote to Heinrich von Stephan on February 5, 1879 in preparation for the establishment of the Electrotechnical Association, he coined the word electrical engineering . “The founding of the Electrotechnical Association stimulated the development of the electrotechnical industry in Berlin immensely by bringing together all those interested in electrical engineering. The members of the association stood on the one hand for the growing scientific penetration of electrical engineering and on the other hand for the development of application technology and the associated markets. "Together with the" Royal Technical University of Berlin "founded in March 1879, the Electrotechnical Association Berlin promoted the cooperation of producers, Users and scientists.

Following the example of the Berlin Electrotechnical Association, similar electrotechnical associations emerged in many places in Germany. Their delegates founded the Association of German Electrical Engineers (abbreviated: VDE; today's name: Association of Electrical, Electronics and Information Technology ). The first technical VDE committee had the task of developing regulations for the installation of electrical low-voltage systems. On November 23, 1895, the VDE committee members in Eisenach passed the first safety regulations for electrical power systems . This forerunner of today's DIN VDE 0100 was published in the Elektrotechnische Zeitschrift (ETZ) on January 9, 1896. The VDE regulation on cable lugs and clamping screws was also issued in 1896.

The Electrotechnical Association of Austria was founded in 1883, the year of the first electricity exhibition in Vienna . The association was later transferred to the Austrian Association for Electrical Engineering (ÖVE).

The Swiss Electrotechnical Association was founded on April 24, 1889. The association was later transferred to the Association for Electrical, Energy and Information Technology .
