Life

Elfie Casty graduated from the Swiss Nursing School in Zurich before she got into gastronomy by marrying Tschiery Casty from Davos. First they ran the restaurant "Zum Bergführer" in the Sertig Valley and Tschiery's Bar in Davos together. Together they ran the gourmet restaurant Tschiery's Landhaus in Laret near Davos until 1981 .

Although she was never trained as a cook, she acquired such extensive culinary knowledge as an autodidact that she achieved international renown as a representative of nouvelle cuisine . In 1978 she was the first non-French woman to be admitted to the Association des Restauratrices-Cuisinieres (ARC) and the following year as a Relais Gourmand to the Relais & Châteaux Association and awarded the Ordre du Mérite Agricole by the French government.

In 1979, her first cookbook, Affair in the Kitchen, appeared as a facsimile of her original manuscript. After Elfie Casty and her husband retired to Klosters in 1981, the book Geliebte Küche was published in 1984 . Two more cookbooks followed, With a Pinch of Passion and With Love, Lust and Thyme . The books reached a total circulation of over 200,000 copies.

From 1998 to 2000 Elfie Casty wrote a fortnightly column for the Neue Zürcher Zeitung under the title Bouquet Garni , which was published as a book in 2002.

In addition to her work as an author of cookbooks, Elfie Casty also appeared in cooking programs on Swiss and German television, was a journalist and editor-in-chief of the culinary magazine marmite and conducted cooking courses.

Her husband Tschiery died in January 2009. Elfie Casty had lived in Klosters since 1981 and wrote recipes to the end.
