Elijah Clarence Hills

Elijah Clarence Hills (born July 2, 1867 in Arlington , Illinois , † April 21, 1932 in Los Angeles , California ) was an American Romanist and Hispanist .

life and work

Hills grew up mainly in Florida and came into contact with Spanish early on. He studied at Cornell University (graduating in 1892) and from 1893 to 1894 in Paris . He taught from 1896 at Rollins College in Florida, from 1902 to 1916 at Colorado College (where he had moved for health reasons). In 1906 he received his doctorate at the University of Colorado with the work New-Mexican Spanish (in: PMLA 21, 1906, pp. 706-753). In 1918 he was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences . From 1918 to 1922 he taught at Indiana University Bloomington , from 1922 at the University of California, Berkeley as a professor first for Spanish, from 1924 for Romance languages.

Hills was Commander of the Order de Isabel la Católica .
