Elisabeth von Pilitza

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Elisabeth von Pilitza ( Latin Elisabeth de Pilcza ; * 1372 ; † 1420 in Kraków ) was Queen of Poland and Grand Duchess of Lithuania from 1417 through her marriage to Władysław II Jagiełło . She was the only child of Otto von Pilitza, the voivode of Sandomierz , and his wife Hedwig von Melsztyn on the Dunajec . When her father died in 1384, she inherited large estates, including Pilitza and Łańcut .

Life

She was first married to three Moravian and Polish nobles, Wiszel Czambor de Wissembourg, Jancik de Jičín and Vincentii de Granow (the marriages with Wissel or Wiszel and Jancik are historically controversial), the marriage to her third husband Granowski lasted 13 years and she had two sons and two daughters with him. Granowski died on December 12, 1410, leaving Elisabeth a widow.

On May 2, 1417, she married the Polish King Władysław II Jagiełło, who had also been widowed for a year, in Sanok and was crowned Queen of Poland on May 19 in the Wawel Cathedral in Krakow. The marriage met with fierce opposition from the Polish nobility . Some believed that the 65-year-old King, who at the time only had one living daughter, should have taken a younger wife than the 45-year-old Elisabeth.

In 1419 Elisabeth fell ill with tuberculosis and died in Cracow in 1420. She was buried in the Wawel Cathedral.
