Elisabeth von Schmidt-Pauli

Elisabeth Nicoline Ida Agnes Marie von Schmidt-Pauli (born October 10, 1882 in Hamburg , † July 26, 1956 in Munich ) was a German writer . She wrote mainly theological and biographical writings and processed her material in books for young people .

Life

Elisabeth von Schmidt-Pauli was the daughter of the Hamburg merchant Edgar von Schmidt-Pauli (1853–1920) and the Hungarian baroness Josepha Fiath von Eörményes and Karansébes (1855–1945). She was the first female theology student at the University of Bonn . The Catholic finished her education in Strasbourg and Munich and traveled to the USA shortly before 1914. There she campaigned in religious circles for donations for East Prussia during the war , but she also fell ill with typhus and lost her hearing.

Back in Germany, she met Rainer Maria Rilke and Cardinal Michael von Faulhaber , about whom she wrote extensive biographies. She also described Bernhard von Clairvaux , Elisabeth von Thuringia , Niels Stensen and Maria Goretti . With a historical novel about Christopher Columbus and Isabelle of Spain , she also produced an extensive book for young people.

Baroness Schmidt-Pauli lived in Munich until her house was destroyed in World War II , then she retired to a monastery. In the post-war period, she campaigned for international youth work, arranged exchange trips to the USA and supported, among other things, the idea of children's villages .
