The Elisabethenschule is a state-recognized private secondary school in Hofheim am Taunus , which was founded by the Order of the Poor Maidservants of Jesus Christ (ADJC) (Dernbacher Sisters) as a girls' school and is still referred to as a " Christian school " today.

history

The Elisabethenschule emerged from humble beginnings, borne by the knowledge of social hardship and religious necessities after the time of the Kulturkampf at the end of the 19th century . In April 1893, two sisters of the poor servants of Jesus Christ began teaching in Hofheim. Sister Bona and Sister Bonaventura took care of the neglected schooling of the girls.

The city of Hofheim made two rooms in the cellar building available to the sisters at a rental price of 200 Reichsmarks (around 1,390 euros today) . Five years later, in June 1898, the sisters and their pupils were able to move from the small and damp rooms of the cellar building to a house on Elisabethenstrasse. These rooms were also rented because the purchase price of 12,800 Reichsmarks (about 87,800 euros) was unaffordable. Foreign students could now also be fed here for lunch; for 10 pfennigs per meal (0.69 euros). The school has had its location on Rossertstrasse since 1905. The number of students had meanwhile increased and the city of Hofheim was interested in it. This should pay off: There was an annual grant of 800 Reichsmarks (around 5,100 euros). After the end of the First World War , democratic ideas also entered the school. Parents were given a say. According to the chronicle, the first parents' council election in 1920 was "quite stormy".

After the development of new curricula, the " Mittlere Reife " certificate could be awarded from 1927 . In that year the school was also named "Elisabeth School". In the 1930s, the political pressure of the National Socialist regime on the school that was not " aligned " increased. On March 20, 1940, the sisters finally had to close the school.

A new start was possible in April 1946 with the permission of the American military government. Under conditions that are hardly imaginable today, the sister started teaching again.

The number of schoolgirls rose sharply from 1949 and in 1953 the first extension building on Rossertstrasse could be moved into. For the first time, there were also specialist rooms for physics and chemistry . What was still missing was a sports hall. In 1963/64 the next extension was built on Kurhausstraße. Spring and slope water caused a dramatic development: the building between Rossertstrasse and Kurhausstrasse threatened to slip. Fortunately, in a nightly rescue operation, sheet piling could be driven into the ground for stabilization. Constant reaction to the changes in society is one of the principles of the school. When the trend towards the Abitur became stronger at the end of the 1960s, the school began trying to prepare students for both professional life and the transition to upper secondary school. Elective courses and differentiation have been expanded and adapted to the modern needs of society. This concept has proven to be successful to this day.

At the same time, the desire of former schoolgirls and many parents also grew to give boys the chance of a Christian upbringing. The headmistress at the time, Sister Heriberta, was not deterred by great skepticism within the school and external warnings and took the first boys into school in 1978. This of course led to a further increase in the number of students. In 1982/83 and 1989/90 additional structural extensions could be realized. There was another cut between these construction phases. In 1986, Sister Heriberta resigned after 14 years as headmistress. For the first time in the history of the school, a "secular" colleague, Manfred Lorenz, took over the management of the school. The Congregation of the Poor Maidservants of Jesus Christ retained the sponsorship of the school.

In 2001 the congregation acquired another neighboring property. Another extension followed, which was completed in 2003 for the 110th anniversary. In addition to the school authority, the diocese of Limburg , the Main-Taunus district , the cities of Hofheim , Flörsheim , Eppstein and the communities of Kriftel and Liederbach also contributed to the construction costs . The school community also had to contribute a considerable amount of its own. In addition to larger classrooms and another science room, a larger cafeteria was also built. Thus - for the first time since 1910 - an all-day offer could be made again. After all, the older parts of the building no longer met today's requirements for economical use of energy. Full thermal insulation, solar-powered water heating and the use of rainwater for flushing toilets were and are important contributions to the economical use of resources.

On January 1st, 2007 a new chapter began in the long history of the Elisabethenschule. The personnel situation of the previous school sponsor, the Congregation Poor Maidservants of Jesus Christ, had led to considerations regarding a change in sponsorship for a long time. It was therefore only logical that the Maria-Hilf-Kranken- und Pflegeegesellschaft mbH, which the Congregation ADJC had founded years before as the sponsoring company for the other institutions of the order in Germany, also took over the Elisabethenschule as sponsor. This means that a strong company with a total of more than 5000 employees stands behind the school. The Elisabeth School is the only general education school in this society. This means that not only does the school have to adjust to a changed situation, but the sponsoring company is also confronted with new problem areas.

The sponsorship of the Elisabethenschule, which has changed since 2007, guarantees the continued existence of a school with an eventful and eventful history. The original mission - service for man in service for God - has remained the same even after more than 110 years.
