The Elisabethhaus ( English Elisabeth House ), also popularly known as the Stork's Nest , is a historic maternity home in the Namibian capital Windhoek . Today (as of March 2020) it serves as the headquarters of the History Center of the Namibia University of Science and Technology (NUST).
It has been a National Monument of Namibia since May 15, 1986 .
description
The Elisabethhaus is built of stone and comprises large living and dining rooms, four hospital rooms, a nurses' room, an operating room with three large arched windows and a kitchen and storage room in the south wing. The east side is marked by two towers. The building is surrounded by a veranda. A stork figure adorns the roof.
history
The building was erected as a maternity home in 1907 and 1908 based on designs by Gottlieb Redecker on the instructions of the German Colonial Society . Until 1981, under the administration of the Women's Association of the Red Cross for Germans across the Sea, almost 12,700 babies were born here.
In 1912, parts of the veranda were converted into an enclosed space. In 1914 and 1915 extensions followed according to plans by Wilhelm Sander . At that time it served as a refugee camp for Germans.
It closed in 1981.
Another Elisabethhaus was built in Grootfontein and was planned for Omaruru and Gobabis .
