Elitserien (Bandy)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Elitserien has been the top division in Swedish bandy since the 2007/08 season . Before that, the championship round was called the Bandyallsvenskan Elitserien .

background

Since the introduction of a Swedish championship series in the bandy in 1931 (at that time still called Division I ), this was divided into regional groups. This classification has long been debated. Proponents of grouping believed that this system would give smaller clubs better opportunities, as they earned higher income from constant comparisons with the top teams, and because grouping meant a higher number of clubs in the top league. Opponents pointed out that there was a general loss of quality with the groups.

As a first step towards a unified national league, the group phase (now called Allsvenskan ) was played from the 1981/82 season only until Christmas time. Then the eight best teams determined the finalists in a championship round (Elitserien) . The other teams played in the so-called Superettan for the following places.

At numerous meetings and negotiations in the 2004/05 season, the endeavor to found a new first division with 14 clubs consolidated. The decisive decision of the Swedish Bandy Association took place on March 14, 2006. The new league from the 2007/08 season was named Elitserien. The previous first division (Allsvenskan) became the second division.

Game mode

The 14 teams play the group stage with home and away games against all other teams, a total of 26 games. Then the eight best teams begin with the quarter-finals, whereby the teams in places 1 to 4 can choose their opponent. The season is over for places 9 and 10. Places 11 and 12 have to play relegation games against the six best teams in the second division. The teams in positions 13 and 14 will be relegated directly.

The original idea was to reduce the Elitserien to twelve clubs from the 2008/09 season. This project was postponed at the annual meeting of the Bandy Association on June 16, 2007 and completely discarded on June 14, 2008.
