Eliza Branco

Eliza Branco Batista (born December 29, 1912 in Barretos ; died June 8, 2001 in São Paulo ) was a Brazilian women and peace activist .

Life

Branco learned the trade of a textile worker . After the Second World War , she became involved in the Brazilian Women's Association , São Paulo State Association, and became a member of the Partido Comunista Brasileiro (PCB). From 1949 to 1960 she was Vice President of the Council of Brazilian Peace Supporters ( Movimento Brasileiro dos Partidários da Paz ). In September 1950, she protested against the sending of Brazilian soldiers to Korea , for which she was sentenced to four years and three months in prison. She was released in September 1951 under public pressure. From 1951 to 1965 she was a member of the World Peace Council . In 1952 Branco was awarded the Stalin International Peace Prize.
