Elizabeth McCracken (born September 16, 1966 in Boston ) is an American writer of short stories and novels . She holds the James A. Michener Chair in Fiction at the University of Texas .

Life

Elizabeth McCracken attended High School in Newton, Massachusetts and studied English at Boston University . She attended the Iowa Writers' Workshop , received an MFA from the University of Iowa, and trained as a librarian from Drexel University . McCracken was a Guggenheim Fellow and received a. a. Scholarships from the National Endowment for the Arts , the Liguria Study Center, the American Academy in Berlin in 2004 and the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study in 2008/09 .

She worked for a while as a librarian and gave seminars in creative writing at various university institutes , including at the University of Iowa . In 1996 she was nominated for the National Book Award and in 2002 she won the LL Winship / PEN New England Award with Niagara Falls All Over Again . Elizabeth McCracken is friends with the writer Ann Patchett , a role model for her is the author and activist Grace Paley .

McCracken lives in Austin , Texas, is married with two children. She dealt with the loss of a child during pregnancy in her book Memoir: An Exact Replica of a Figment of My Imagination .
