The AB Koton was the largest Lithuanian manufacturer of ladies' tights . The textile company was based in the second largest Lithuanian city of Kaunas . It employed over 1,200 people.

history

On June 1, 1925, "Glalev", the first Lithuanian jersey factory, was founded by G. Glazer and Z. Levusch in Kaunas (63 Kęstučio Street). Instead of this factory, Levusch, Aranauskas and Černesas founded AB "Cotton" in 1930 in the Šančiai district (13 Virvių Street at that time). The patterned tricot and socks were produced. During the Second World War, electrical appliances were taken to Germany by the Wehrmacht and taken to the Third Reich . In 1963 the factory was reconstructed. In 1975 they produced 20.4 million socks. During the Soviet occupation, the company belonged to the state ( Soviet Lithuania ). In 1975 the socks were produced for 10.8 million rubles .

In 1976 it employed 1,240 people and in 1995 only 750 people. AB "Koton" produced 23 items of socks and tights in its range. 30% of the production was sold in Lithuania. 60% were exported to the CIS countries and 10% to Germany . During the season, the company produced and sold 1 million tights per month, from 100,000 to 200,000 pairs from November to February. December 1995 there were about 500,000 pairs of socks and tights in the company warehouse because the supply of raw materials from Russia was disrupted; October wages had not yet been paid.

In 1996 AB "Koton" started to produce tights with new patterns and colors (gray, chocolate, wet asphalt) from the improved Dorlastan and Lycra fibers. The first 600 units of six new types of tights were initially only sold in specialist shops in Kaunas. Until then, the goods were produced to the value of 12 million litas per year. 30% of the production was sold in Lithuania and the rest went to the east (Russia).

In 1996 the company gave its shares to the State Fund of Securities ( Vertybinių popierių fondas ) because of the late payment . From December 1997 to 1998 the factory was privatized at auction by Vertybinių popierių birža . The state sold 22.5% of the shares in "Koton" for 3 million Litas (1.47 Lt each for a share with a nominal value of 1 Lt). The share capital was 9 million Lt. The major shareholder (with 29% shares) was the company "Dobric Consultants Ltd." from Cyprus .

In 1997 there was a lawsuit against the Lithuanian bank Ūkio bankas . The company then owed Lt 2,155,952 (EUR 0.6 million). In 1997 the bankruptcy of the company was postponed due to the mediation of the Association of Light Industries ( Lietuvos lengvosios pramonės įmonių asociacija ). In February 1998 the company's debt burden became litas 3 million more than the value of its property. The renewed production and stable relationships with foreign partners were encouraging. At the end of 1998 the company stopped its activity. In 1998 Ūkio bankas wanted to save the company from bankruptcy. The illegal business completely ruined the textile factory "Koton". In 1998 AB “Koton” became insolvent. In 1999 the company owed SoDra (social security fund ) and the Lithuanian state 10 million Lt (3 million euros). The insolvent company was then dissolved.

Post-history

In 1990 the company TŪB "Dana" (director Vytautas Raižys) was founded with former "Koton" employees and instead of the AB "Koton" factory. It produced women's tights and socks made of polyamide , stretch nylon with lycra. There were 10 names of goods in the assortment. They cooperated with “ Hennes & Mauritz ” (“H&M”) in Sweden . In 2004 a turnover of 10 million litas (3 million euros ) was achieved. "Dana" was owned by Vytautas Raižys and Arnoldas Varanavičius, former "Koton" executives. The 300 m² site was rented. There were 20 knitting machines (manufactured in 1988) from Italy . "Dana" produced around 50,000 pairs of socks and tights a month. The production was then only sold in Lithuania. 44 people were employed.

"Dana" company had 300 trading points in Lithuania. In 1996 the pantyhose manufacturing robots for 200,000 Lt and sewing heads (for 73,000 Lt) were bought from the company "Koton". In 1997 the company acquired four "Matec" knitting machines, then another five new machines (for 135,000 Lt) from Italy . In production, high-quality, good-quality raw materials from Western European companies Nylstar , Fein-Elast , JP Bemberg were used . 93% of the products were sold in Lithuania and 7% in Russia and Latvia .

Later UAB "Dana ir Ko" was established. In 2011 there were 113 employees. The company was headed by General Director Vanda Pranculienė. In July 2013 insolvency proceedings were opened at the Kaunas District Court . In 2014 the company owed Lt 310,529.17 (≈90,000 euros) to SoDra .
