Elizabeth Ruth Bennett (born October 9, 1880 in Shawnee on Delaware, Pennsylvania , United States , † October 15, 1972 in Ann Arbor , Michigan ) was an American mathematician and university professor. She was the first woman to receive her PhD in mathematics from the University of Illinois in 1910 .

life and work

Bennett was born in Shawnee in 1880 and graduated from Ohio University in Athens in 1903 . From 1907 to 1908 she received a mathematics scholarship from the University of Illinois and from 1908 to 1910 a fellowship. She received her master’s degree there in 1908 and received her doctorate in 1910 with George Abram Miller with the dissertation: Primitive Groups with a Determination of the Primitive Groups of Degree 20. The work was later published in the American Journal of Mathematics, Volume 34, No. 1, p Published 1–20. She then taught at the University of Nebraska , where she was a lecturer in the math department. She married John Grennan, a professor in the mechanical engineering department. From 1918 to 1921 she taught at the University of Illinois. She then moved to Ann Arbor , Michigan, where her husband taught at the University of Michigan. The Elizabeth R. Bennett Fellowship in Mathematics was established at the University of Illinois in 1974 by a bequest from Elizabeth Bennett.
