Elk Franke

Elk Franke (* 1942 ) is a German sports scientist and university professor .

Life

Franke attended school in Oranienburg and Darmstadt , followed by a teaching degree in history, politics and sport, which he completed at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz and at the Free University of Berlin . He then studied philosophy, sociology and educational science at the Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg and the Universität Karlsruhe . In 1977 he completed his doctoral thesis in Karlsruhe on the subject of “Theory and Significance of Sports Activities. Requirements and possibilities of a sports theory from an action theory perspective ”.

From 1980 to 1995 Franke held a professorship for sport and society at the University of Osnabrück . During this time he was also chairman of the German Association for Sports Science between 1989 and 1991 . In 1995 he took up a professorship for pedagogy and philosophy of sport at the Humboldt University in Berlin and remained in office until 2009. Between 2010 and 2013 Franke was a visiting professor in the cultural studies department at the University of Bremen .

Franke was a member of the ethics council for sports science research and a special reviewer for sports philosophy at the German Research Foundation .

His main areas of work included ethics and aesthetics of sport, theory of action, educational theory of sport, the role of the trainer in sport, the subject areas of "sport and health" as well as "sport and leisure" and doping. Furthermore, Franke dealt with sports history topics such as the "early history of the Dynamo sports association" and German sport after 1945. He dealt with the question "Sport - the religion of the 20th century?"
