History and etymology

There was a plan at the WA Land Company, the company that built the Great Southern Railway , in 1889 to build a town on what is now Elleker, which would be called Lakeside, since it would have been near Lake Powell. But this was not really successful. The government bought the railway line and redesigned the place. It was decided against it to use the name Lakeside, because one wanted to avoid confusion with another Lakeside near Kalgoorlie . Therefore, the station should now be called Torbay Junction .

In 1921 Western Australia Railways decided to rename the place to Ualungup , but because it was feared that it would sound too much like Yallingup , it was rejected. The Elleker and Lockyer alternatives were proposed and the Elleker name was adopted. The name was suggested by Mr. J Mowforth, a member of the Albany Road Board. This one is from Yorkeshire . The name is based on the town of Ellerker in Yorkeshire.
