Ellen Gates Starr

Ellen Gates Starr (born March 19, 1859 near Laona in the US state of Illinois , † February 10, 1940 in Suffern , New York ) was an American social reformer and pioneer of the settlement movement .

Since studying at the Rockford Women's Seminary (1877/78), Ellen Starr was friends with Jane Addams , with whom she traveled to Europe in 1888 and got to know Toynbee Hall in London. After their return, she and Addams founded the Hull House in Chicago .
