Ellen Hansell
Ellen Forde Hansell Allerdice (born September 18, 1869 in Philadelphia , Pennsylvania , † May 11, 1937 in Pittsburgh , Pennsylvania) was an American tennis player .
Life
Ellen Hansell, who suffered from anemia in her childhood , won the first edition of the American Women's Tennis Championships in 1887 at the age of 17 . In the final of the competition, which was held in her hometown of Philadelphia at the time, she clearly defeated her compatriot Laura Knight 6-1 and 6-0. The following year she was defeated in the Challenge Round Bertha Townsend 3: 6 and 5: 6 and then did not take part in tennis tournaments.
She died in Pittsburgh in 1937 at the age of 67. In 1965 she was inducted into the Hall of Fame of Tennis.
