Elmar Bigger
Elmar Bigger (born October 5, 1949 in Vilters ) is a Swiss politician ( SVP ). From 1999 to 2011 he was the National Councilor of the Canton of St. Gallen .
Political career
Even before his election to the Cantonal Council, he held political mandates at the municipal level. In the nineties he decided to raise laying hens and built a barn for this purpose without building permission, which was denounced by the observer . Although the building was rated as not compliant with the zones, it was ultimately allowed to stand still. The responsible local authority justified its decision by stating that chicken breeding is a livelihood for Biggers. In 2001 the approach of the farmer was criticized by the animal rights activist Erwin Kessler .
Bigger has been president of the SVP local party in Vilters-Wangs since July 1996 . In 1996 he was elected to the Cantonal Parliament of the Canton of St. Gallen and in the 1999 elections to the National Council. He sat for a long time on the pardons commission of the National Council, later he had a seat until 2011 in the commission for the environment, planning and energy as well as in the commission for public buildings. In the elections of October 23, 2011 he was not re-elected.
According to his own statement, he advocates strong agriculture , better cooperation between agriculture and tourism and against Switzerland's accession to the EU .
Bigger was President of the Producer Milk Recyclers Organization (PMO) Eastern Switzerland, which went bankrupt in March 2011.
Bigger has three children, is a master farmer and lives in Vilters.
