Elmar Braun (born April 16, 1956 in Sulmingen , today part of the Maselheim municipality in the Biberach district ) is a German local politician . He has been mayor of Maselheim since 1991 and was the first mayor in Germany to belong to the Greens .

Life

Braun grew up on his parents' farm in Sulmingen. After attending primary school in Sulmingen, the Wieland grammar school in Biberach an der Riß and the Benedictine college in Laupheim , he passed the secondary school leaving certificate at the Schwendi secondary school .

In 1973 he began training as a biology laboratory assistant at Dr. Karl Thomae GmbH in Biberach (today Boehringer Ingelheim ). He then worked for 14 years in biological research and as an exempt works council. As a sideline, he ran his parents' farm as an organic farm from 1976 to 1991 .

He came to the Greens in 1983 through nature conservation and organic farming . However, Braun was also active in local politics before. From 1979 to 1991 he was a member of the Sulmingen local council . From 1984 to 1989 he was also a local councilor in Maselheim. Since 1986 he has been a member of the district council of the Biberach district . On March 24, 1991, he ran for the Greens in the mayoral election in Maselheim and prevailed against two competitors with 53 percent of the votes cast. In 1999 he was re-elected with almost 70 percent of the votes cast, in 2007 with 82.4 percent and in 2015 with 85.1 percent. From 1986 to 1990 he was a member of the extended state board of the Baden-Württemberg Greens .

Braun is divorced and has three children.
