Elmar Doppelfeld (born October 20, 1939 in Cologne ) is a German physician , editor and medical ethicist .

Life

Elmar Doppelfeld, son of the Cologne archaeologist and founder of the Roman-Germanic Museum Otto Doppelfeld , studied law , history and scientific politics at the Eberhard Karls University in Tübingen after completing his high school diploma in 1960 . In 1962 he switched to the medical faculty and studied in Tübingen , Münster and Cologne . In 1968 he was at the University of Cologne with a nuclear medicine work for Dr. med. PhD and approved in 1970. From 1970 to 1977 he trained as a specialist in radiology and as a specialist in nuclear medicine at the university clinics in Zurich , Cologne and Aachen . From 1977 to 1980, Doppelfeld was a research assistant at the Institute for Clinical and Experimental Nuclear Medicine at the University of Bonn, and in 1980 he submitted his habilitation in the subject of "Nuclear Medicine". In 1980 he took on a teaching position for nuclear medicine at the Medical Faculty of the University of Zurich. In 1981 he became senior physician at the Clinic for Radiation Therapy at the University of Cologne.

In 1982 Elmar Doppelfeld became the managing doctor of the German Medical Association . In 1989 he took over the management of the medical and scientific editorial office of Deutsches Ärzteblatt , which he held until his retirement in 2004. Since 1986 he has been an adjunct professor at the University of Bonn.

Doppelfeld was a founding member of the working group of medical ethics commissions in the Federal Republic of Germany and became a board member in 1988. In 1994 he became chairman of the working group of medical ethics commissions in Germany. In 2012 he did not stand for re-election after 30 years on the board. In 1990 he was appointed to the Steering Committee for Bioethics of the Council of Europe and became a board member in 2001 and vice-president in 2003, and president from 2005 to 2007. Doppelfeld played a key role in the statements on the “Human Rights Convention on Biomedicine of the Council of Europe” and the “Research on Humans” protocol adopted by the Council of Europe's Council of Ministers in 2004. Doppelfeld is still a member of the German delegation in the Steering Committee for Bioethics of the Council of Europe. Since 2012 Elmar Doppelfeld has been President of the European network of national networks in European countries, EUREC, which he co-founded.

Elmar Doppelfeld has been a member of the Catholic student union AV Cheruskia Tübingen in the CV since 1960 . He is on the board of directors of the St. Marien Hospital Association, an organ within the Foundation of the Cellitinnen zur St. Maria.
