Reviews

As if there was a heaven

  • Jury of the German Youth Literature Award : “The author has put the complex events, questions, fates and feelings of this time into a multi-perspective narrative in order to draw a facet of life in war with each figure and its narrative text. In addition, she gives each of the four protagonists their own voice. This time of crisis raises questions like how to behave in a totalitarian system or how to cope with guilt. Els Beerten delivers a demanding description of the disorientation of young people in difficult times and impressively conveys their wishes, dreams, longings, fears and fears to the reader. Mirjam Pressler translated this novel in a convincing way. "
  • Süddeutsche Zeitung : "But the deeper you read into this confusion of voices, the more captivating the story becomes, the more you understand the message of the Belgian author:" The war, that's us. ""

run for your life

  • FAZ : “ Run for your life , awarded the Gouden Zoen as the best Dutch youth novel in 2004, blends biography scenes of a damaged personality who draws an idiosyncratic resilience from hidden reserves. The author counteracts the drama of the event with a defiantly lively narrative that harmoniously combines sadness and fear with moments of enthusiasm and relief. As a first-person narrator, Noor, who has fallen silent in direct conversation, can report relentlessly honestly and without distance. This voice is authentic and attractive, one follows her into the depths of her fear. Noor's real achievement consists, much more than the physical exertion of the marathon, in this narration while on the move, out of the space of the running, which allows her to be so close to herself that she can communicate. She sets the course of her life against the out of joint résumé - and this touching protocol. "
