Wilhelm Steffens

EA Wilhelm Steffens (born August 22, 1883 in Braunschweig , † April 3, 1970 in Münster ) was a German teacher , historian and politician ( DVP ).

Life

Wilhelm Steffens was born the son of a chamber virtuoso. After graduating from high school in Braunschweig, he studied history, German and philosophy at the Georg-August-Universität Göttingen . He received his doctorate in 1906 for Dr. phil. (Dissertation: Hardenberg and the estates opposition 1810/1811 ) and passed the state examination in 1907. He then entered the school service and initially worked as a teacher at the grammar schools in Frankfurt (Oder) and Brandenburg an der Havel . In 1910 he got a position as a senior teacher in Berlin-Wilmersdorf . From 1914 to 1918 he took part in the First World War as a soldier .

In 1918 Steffens was appointed director of the municipal lyceum in Bartenstein . In 1924 he switched to the Winrich von Kniprode School (state grammar school and advanced school) in Marienburg as senior director of studies and in 1933 received a position as grammar school director in Münster. During the Weimar Republic , Steffens was a member of the German People's Party (DVP), for which he was a member of the Prussian state parliament from 1921 to 1932 . In addition, he worked as a historian with a focus on Westphalian regional history. He had been a member of the Historical Commission for Westphalia since 1934 and became an honorary member in 1963.
