Else Mathilde Erna Hirschberg (born February 11, 1892 in Berlin , † 1942 in Auschwitz concentration camp ), was a German chemist . She is considered to be the first female chemistry graduate at the University of Rostock .

Life

Gravestone of Aurelie Hirschberg, Else Hirschberg's mother, in the Jewish cemetery in Rostock .

Else Hirschberg was born in 1892 to a Jewish family. Her father, Louis Michael called Ludwig Hirschberg, was a merchant and railway director. Her mother Aurelie Hirschberg geb. Kroner, came from an important rabbi family . The couple had four daughters in total: Else, Paula, Hertha and Margot. Else Hirschberg attended high schools in Berlin , Königsberg and Rostock .

In 1908, Hirschberg began attending chemistry lectures at the University of Rostock. In Mecklenburg women were only allowed to study in the winter semester of 1909/10. Hirschberg passed her association examination in 1913 with August Michaelis , but was not admitted to the doctorate due to a lack of a high school diploma. From 1917 Hirschberg worked as a research assistant at the Physiological Institute of the University of Rostock. In 1927 she passed an examination similar to the Abitur and was able to complete her doctorate in 1928. At the same time, she enrolled for a medical degree, which enabled her to get a regular job. Because of her Jewish descent, Hirschberg was released in 1933.

After her mother's death in 1936, Hirschberg moved to Hamburg , where she worked as a laboratory manager at the Israelite Hospital in Hamburg . She tried in vain to emigrate to the USA , for which she asked William Albert Noyes , whom she knew from a conference in Rostock, for help. He took over affidavits for her, Hertha and Margot Hirschberg , but these never reached the three sisters. On July 11, 1942, Else Hirschberg and her sister Margot were deported to Auschwitz , the exact date of her death is not known.
