Else Schmitt

Else Marie Sofie Schmitt (born May 2, 1921 in Brühl , † March 22, 1995 in Cologne ) was a German local politician . She was the first female mayor of the city of Cologne.

biography

Else Schmitt was a trained clerk and interpreter . She belonged to the SPD , was chairman of the working group of social democratic women in Cologne and sat on the Central Rhine district committee.

From 1961 to 1984 Schmitt was a member of the city council and from 1969 to 1975 mayor of Cologne. As a trade unionist , she sat on the administrative board of the employment office and campaigned for the training of young people. She also spoke out in favor of separating primary and secondary schools .

In addition, Else Schmitt was a member of the SPD party council in the 1970s and campaigned for the reform of Section 218 of the Criminal Code regulating abortion and Section 175 (sexual acts between men of the sexes).

Schmitt was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit twice - in 1974 and 1986 ; In 1986 she received the Federal Cross of Merit, 1st class .

In 1975 Else Schmitt appeared on behalf of the Deutsche Fernsehlotterie in the television program Amlauf Band in a sketch with Klaus Kinski .
