Parents meeting

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The parents' meeting (also called the parents' evening ) is a frequently chosen method of parents' work in institutions for children and young people (day-care centers, schools, homes ...). The parents' meeting is the conceptual counterpart to a case- parent meeting (. Eg door and Angel talks , parent-teacher interview ).

The main advantage of this method for the institutions is its efficiency when it comes to conveying similar information to a relatively large homogeneous group of parents, typically at the beginning of a school year. As a rule, parents' meetings are organized in such a way that parents can exchange ideas with one another. In schools and day-care centers in particular, the elections for parent representatives continue to take place at parents' meetings. Parents meetings are thus seen as a form of parental participation.

Occasionally, parents' evenings are also held at facilities for the disabled, vocational schools or universities . At the TU Darmstadt , for example, in December 2006 the parents were invited by the local AStA due to the campaign “Parents and older people together with students against tuition fees ”. At the University of Karlsruhe , such events serve as first-semester greetings.

Parents meetings at school

The parents' meeting is a class-specific event to which all parents of a class are invited directly.

Legal basis

Since school law is a matter of the state, there are country-specific legal bases. In terms of content, however, the regulations are similar in the individual countries .

The further details refer primarily to the federal state of Hesse .

According to § 72 (2) Hessisches Schulgesetz ( Hessisches Schulgesetz ), the advice and information rights of parents are fulfilled “as a rule in the parents' assemblies”. This is the name given to the most important function of the parents' evenings.

In accordance with Section 106 of the Hessian School Act, the parents 'representatives are elected at parents' assemblies. Parents' evenings are therefore an essential part of parental participation.

Organization and content

The parents 'evening is invited and chaired by the class parents' representative, class parents 'council or chairman of the class parents' meeting. The class teacher invites you to the first parents' evening (on which the class parent representative / advisory board is elected). In Hesse, at least two parents' evenings are required per school year. The parent's spokesperson / advisory board is free to invite further appointments as required.

Tasks are:

  • Election of the class parent council or class parent representative
  • Participation in the decision-making and planning of school trips
  • Parents information
    • Parental rights, school rules and house rules
    • Curriculum and learning objectives of the respective grades
    • various forms of teaching, e.g. B. Project teaching and learning techniques
    • Problems with homework, poor performance, discipline or grading

Situation in other countries

United States

Parents' evenings are not common in US public schools . The class associations are reassembled every school year, so that there are hardly any long-term networks between the parents of the students in a class.

Parents exercise their right to participate in political decision-making in the school districts, where they - together with all other citizens entitled to vote - elect the board of education (German: "School Board"). Further possibilities of co-determination are offered by (voluntary) membership and participation in the Parent Teacher Associations (PTA, German: " Parent Teacher Associations ") of the schools.

The teachers discuss the learning progress of individual students with their parents in regular private conferences ( Parent Teacher Conferences ).
