Elyse Knox , actually Elsie Lillian Kornbrath , (born December 14, 1917 in Hartford , Connecticut , † February 15, 2012 in Los Angeles , California ) was an American actress .

Life

The daughter of Austrian emigrants studied at the School of Fashion in Manhattan and began a career as a fashion designer. She presented her own designs, including in Vogue , herself as a model and in 1937 received an acting contract with 20th Century Fox . Knox mainly starred in B-movies until 1942 when she got the lead role in The Mummy's Tomb , one of Universal Studios ' mummy films . Knox was a well-known pin-up girl during World War II. Her pictures appeared on many magazine covers. After the war she starred in the monogamous series of six films about Joe Palooka, his fiancée Annie Howe .

Knox became engaged to football player Tom Harmon . Harmon broke the engagement when he joined the army in 1942. In the same year Knox married the fashion photographer Paul Hesse. However, the marriage was short-lived. After the divorce and the return of Tom Harmon from the war - he survived two plane crashes and was missing in the jungle - the two married in 1944. Elyse's wedding dress was made from Harmon's parachute silk. The marriage had three children, including Mark Harmon , who also became an actor.
