Emblethis griseus is a bug fromthe Rhyparochromidae family .
features
The bugs are 5.4 to 6.7 millimeters long. The bugs of the genus Emblethis are straw-colored with a dark pattern. Emblethis griseus can be distinguished from the very similar Emblethis denticollis by the longer first segment of the tarsi of the hind legs, which is twice as long as the second and third tarsal joint together. Also Emblethis griseus somewhat elongated and less oval than the similar style.
distribution and habitat
The species is particularly widespread in southern Europe and also colonizes North Africa. In the east, the distribution extends over Asia Minor to the Caucasus . In Germany, the limit of distribution is in the northwest and north (Brandenburg). Especially in the east and south-west of Germany, the species is only very poorly distributed and not common. In Austria, the species has so far only been found in the east. Like Emblethis denticollis , the species mainly colonizes sunny, open habitats, where it lives in the litter and on sandy and loamy soils. The species occurs very often in eutrophic places in the cultivated landscape between ruderal vegetation with overgrown cruciferous vegetables (Brassicaceae), knotweed (Polygonaceae) and sunflower (Asteraceae).
Way of life
The animals do not differ from Emblethis denticollis in their way of life either . They suck on seeds on the ground and are apparently not dependent on any special plant species. In at least some areas there are two generations per year. The adults overwinter, the first generation is adult from June or July, the second from August or September.
