Emigrante is the second studio album by the Cuban band Orishas . It was released on June 11, 2002 on Universal Latino and combines modern hip-hop with Cuban folk music such as son and bolero . The album won the Latin Grammy Award for Best Rap / Hip-Hop Album 2003 and was also nominated for a Grammy in the category "Best Latin Rock / Alternative Album".

backgrounds

At the time of the recording, the musicians lived in exile in Paris , Milan and Madrid , and the album was recorded in Spain and France. The band dedicated it to all immigrants around the world, addressing their problems and the lack of rights granted to them. Still, the band doesn't see Emigrante as a political album. In addition to these topics, the band processed stories from their homeland and their own experiences that they had made in their new adopted home. Although ignored by most US radio stations, around 50,000 units were sold by Emigrante in the US alone.

Reviews

laut.de says about the album: This record is indispensable for lovers of Latin music, but “Emigrante” also has a lot to offer hip-hop heads . Lisa Hageman of CMJ New Music Report points out that albums in foreign languages don't necessarily interfere with listening pleasure. She characterizes the music as a mixture of the best of Cuban music, especially the Son , with basic elements of hip-hop such as scratching . The album is “definitely a precision landing”, perhaps mainly because you don't understand the lyrics.
