Emil Flechsig (born November 24, 1808 in Wiesenburg , † December 17, 1878 in Zwickau ) was a German Lutheran clergyman, librettist and the father of the famous brain researcher and neuroanatomist Paul Flechsig .

Life

Emil Flechsig's father was an actuary . Flechsig studied theology in Leipzig from 1827 to 1831. He was enrolled on May 18, 1827. In 1828 he occupied the same apartment as his childhood friend, the later composer Robert Schumann . He has had a lifelong friendship with him since his high school years in Zwickau. After completing his studies, he went back to Zwickau and initially became a teacher. In 1838 he was licensed in Zwickau at St. Marienkirche, in 1844 a deacon , in 1851 protodeacon . In 1873 he retired. This pastor's position was then withdrawn.

The libretto of the secular oratorio Das Paradies und die Peri (op. 50) was translated by Emil Flechsig based on the Orient epic Lalla Rookh by Thomas Moore and edited together with the composer. It was completed in May 1843. The premiere took place on December 4, 1843 in Leipzig.

Flechsig is an important witness to Schumann's youth, and probably beyond, through the memories he handed down about Schumann. Flechsig's lasting significance lies in the translation of Paradise and the Peri for the oratorio, which Schumann himself initially wanted to be understood as poetry in order to emphasize what is “new” in the setting. Schumann himself considered it his “greatest work”.

On the other hand, almost nothing is known about Flechsig's long service in the Marienkirche in Zwickau.
