Emil Hironymus Kuhrt (born September 19, 1848 in Itzehoe ; † August 21, 1909 in Westerland ) was the founder of many small railways and protagonist of the Prussian Small Railroad Act of 1892 .

Life

After graduating from high school , Kuhrt studied railway construction and machine technology at the Technical University of Hanover from 1870 to 1874 . After completing his studies, he joined the Kiel-Eckernförde-Flensburg Railway Company in 1878 , where he was involved in planning the construction of the Kiel-Flensburg railway line . He rose quickly and in 1881 led the expansion of the section from Flensburg to Lindaunis.

On the basis of the experience he gained, Kuhrt planned the expansion of the branch line network in eastern Schleswig from 1882 and designed a network extending from Hadersleben to Eckernförde . He was able to implement his concept of cheap construction and operation as an alternative to the construction of expensive normal railway lines and highways when building the Flensburg circular railway, which was still licensed as a branch line in 1886 . He helped ensure that the Prussian Kleinbahngesetz appeared. In the Duchy of Schleswig, annexed by Prussia in 1869, Kuhrt promoted the construction of the Apenrader Kreisbahn , Kreisbahn on Alsen , Haderslebener Kreisbahn , and was involved in planning the Niebüll – Dagebüll small railway and the first stretch of the Sylt Inselbahn to Munkmarsch. At the Flensburger Kreisbahn and Sylter Inselbahn he temporarily took over the function of operations director.
