Emil Heinrich Memmen (born October 8, 1905 in Adelstedt , † May 1, 1998 in Bremerhaven ) was a German captain and government director.
Live and act
In 1921 he entered shipping and sailed around Cape Horn several times . In 1929 he acquired the master's license with distinction. During the Second World War in 1939 he was initially a ship's officer on the steamer Crefeld , who sought refuge in the Italian port of Massaua in East Africa with a cargo of soybeans on the way back from a trip to East Asia . Even before the self-sinking of the Crefeld on April 4, 1941, Memmen was commanded as first officer on the Coburg in early 1941 , whose attempt to break away from Massaua also ended with self-sinking in the Indian Ocean on March 4, 1941. Memmen was transported to South Africa via Mauritius and interned there in the Baviaanspoort camp. In 1947 he returned to Germany and began to work as a showman in the port. In 1949 Memmen was then port captain in Brake (Unterweser) and sub-director of the Weser port authority . After further trips as a captain for the North German Lloyd , Memmen was appointed head of the nautical department at the German Hydrographic Institute in 1961 . There he resigned as a government director in 1970.
Memmen was chairman of the German Seamen's Mission for several years , first in Brake, then 1975–1981 in Hamburg. He was also the managing director of the German Nautical Association .
From 1975 to 1990 Memmen was president of the German section of the Cap Horniers , since then its honorary president. In April 1984 Memmen presented the then Federal President Karl Carstens with the Cap Horniers medal.
Together with Egbert Thomer, Memmen was on the editorial board of Köhler's fleet calendar in 1991 .
In 1979 Memmen received the Federal Cross of Merit .
