Emil Reisser (born September 19, 1878 in Walldorf (Baden) , † January 16, 1943 in Meersburg ) was a German construction officer and monument conservator.

Live and act

Emil Reisser, son of a teacher, studied building and art history in Munich and Karlsruhe from 1897 to 1903, then did a construction internship until 1908. From 1910 he was in charge of the new building for the Wiesloch sanatorium with the rank of building inspector . From 1911 to 1940 he headed the district building inspector and the district building authority of Konstanz as a superstructure inspector, since 1920 building officer, since 1934 senior government building officer and building director. In this role, he oversaw numerous public buildings, in particular the completion of the Reichenau sanatorium . Reisser campaigned for the preservation of architectural monuments, for example in the restoration of the Constance Minster from 1916 (in collaboration with Fritz Hirsch and Paul Motz ) or the Constance St. Stephen's Church from 1920. In 1939, he prevented the development of the site on which the church was built until 1832 of the Petershausen Monastery . On January 1, 1941, he took early retirement due to illness.

Reisser acquired lasting importance through his archaeological excavations on the island of Reichenau, where, with the help of Konrad Beyerle and Joseph Sauer , he thoroughly examined the former monastery church and its immediate surroundings from 1929 to 1941 . In 1939, the excavation results formed the basis for his doctorate, supervised by Joseph Sauer, at the University of Freiburg im Breisgau . Reisser's fatal illness and the circumstances of the time delayed publication until 1960. The reconstruction of the architectural history of the Reichenau Minster proposed therein was criticized; however, the excavation documents rediscovered by Alfons Zettler prove the care of the preparatory work. Another important achievement by Reisser in terms of monument preservation is the restoration of the old Reichenau town hall (today the Reichenau Museum) in the years 1938 to 1942. Reisser did not see the issues of monument protection in isolation, but, in particular, on the shores of Lake Constance as part of a comprehensive concern for the preservation of cultural and cultural heritage Natural landscape.

Reisser was married without children.
