Emil Schibli

Emil Schibli (born February 6, 1891 in Fislisbach ; † May 12, 1958 in Lengnau ) was a Swiss bookseller , teacher and writer .

life and work

Emil Schibli was the son of Josef Damian and Emilia Schibli, née Bossard. He grew up in poor conditions and had to work as a contract child . As a 13-year-old Schibli wrote poems that were printed in newspapers and magazines.

After completing an apprenticeship as a bookseller at Rascher Verlag in Zurich , Schibli worked in Alexander Franke's bookstore in Bern . Here he met Hermann Hesse , who also became his great role model, and like Hesse, Schibli painted and drew in his spare time.

Schibli completed the teachers' seminar in Bern and then taught as a teacher in Lengnau from 1918 to 1956. In 1919 he married Frieda, nee Furrer. Schibli maintained contact with Ernst Morgenthaler , who moved to Zurich- Höngg in 1932 . With him he met u. a. Karl Geiser and Max Bill , who had built his first house on the neighboring property.

In 1937 Schibli received the Book Guild Gutenberg Prize for his book We want to live . In it, Schibli describes how the architect Eduard Lanz designed and built Schibli's house.
