Emil Schnell

Emil Schnell (born November 10, 1953 in Packebusch , Altmark ) is a German politician ( SPD ). In 1990 he was the last minister for post and telecommunications in the GDR and then a member of the German Bundestag until 2002 .

Life and work

From 1960 to 1968 he attended the Polytechnische Oberschule, then he did his Abitur until 1972 . From 1972 to 1975 he served in the NVA . 1975 to 1980 studied he Physics at the Technical University of Magdeburg , closing this as diploma from physicists. Schnell was then a research assistant until 1983, also at the Technical University of Magdeburg. From 1983 he was a research assistant at the Academy of Sciences of the GDR and received his doctorate in 1984. From 1988 he was head of department of the Academy of Sciences of the GDR at the Research Center for High Pressure Research in Potsdam.

Emil Schnell is married and has two children.

In 1989 Schnell joined the newly founded Social Democratic Party in the GDR and became managing director in Potsdam.

As a result of the first free elections Schnell became a member of the People's Chamber of the GDR for the Eastern SPD from March 1990 to October 1990. From April 1990 until the SPD left the GDR government in August 1990, Schnell was the first and last freely elected minister for Post and telecommunications in the GDR .

From October 1990 to 2002 he was a member of the German Bundestag for the SPD. In the federal elections in 1990, 1994 and 1998 he won the direct mandate in the constituency of Potsdam .
