Emil Walser

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Emil Walser (born July 8, 1909 in Gais , † February 16, 1972 in Trogen ) was a Swiss composer and folk musician from Trogen in the canton of Appenzell Ausserrhoden .

Emil Walser grew up in Gais, where his parents ran a bakery. During school he learned to play the violin. One of his violin teachers was the musician from the first known Appenzell string music formation, String Quintet Appenzell , Josef Peterer, nickname: "Gehrseff" (1872–1945) from Appenzell . As a teenager (and again later) Emil Walser often played with Heinrich Brenner, a collector and promoter of Appenzell music and later winner of the Radio and TV Prize of Eastern Switzerland in 1956 (honoring the Edelweiss, Trogen and Franzsepp Inauen bands, Appenzell). Emil Walser did an apprenticeship as a pastry chef and after his apprenticeship in Rorschach worked in various places.

In 1933 he bought a café and pastry shop in Altstätten , which he ran for 28 years. Emil Walser then moved to Trogen and only lived for Appenzell string music . Appenzell string music is the only folk music genre in Switzerland that is known around the world. It owes this not least to the joy in the polyphonic singing of the Appenzell musicians, which is often heard while making music. Appenzell string music is no country music , as it is still largely based on 19th century music. The string instruments were not displaced in Appenzellerland and are still taught and played very often there today. Original Appenzell string music consists of two violins , dulcimer , cello and double bass .

Emil Walser played in the string music Edelweiss Trogen for about 35 years . Many of his compositions were created in this phase. He created pieces of music, primarily dance music, next to zauerli and a few songs, for which he also wrote the lyrics himself. Emil Walser attached great importance to a good education of young Appenzell musicians, besides violin he also taught the dulcimer.

Emil Walser had health problems early on, and a heart attack was a sign of his poor health. Eventually he suffered a second, this time fatal, heart attack while giving music lessons to a student at his home in Trogen. But even after his death his music is played on. Emil Walser not only enriched Appenzell music with numerous compositions, but also shaped his very own and unmistakable style. A peculiarity is that he did not play certain notes directly, but grinded them with a special emphasis on notes, called "zick".
