Emil Wettstein (born December 21, 1877 in Dillenburg , † July 17, 1940 in Zurich ) was a Swiss librarian .

life and work

Wettstein was the son of a Methodist pastor from Zurich and entered the Unterstrass teacher training college in 1894 . After acquiring the teacher's license, Wettstein studied philosophy at the University of Vienna and at the University of Zurich , where he also received his doctorate. Wettstein was appointed to the then modest library by the then ETH library director Ferdinand Rudio in 1903 . When he resigned from his position as senior librarian in 1920, Wettstein was his successor. When the library loans fell noticeably as a result of the financial burden imposed on the federal government, Wettstein succeeded in replacing them with contributions from industrial associations.

Wettstein's good name and general reputation meant that the library was given large collections of scientific books. This also applies to the book collections of the Vulcanological Institute in Naples , which have been added to the ETH library. A technical literature reference was also created on Wettstein's initiative. This position was used extensively by students and engineers at home and abroad.

Wettstein found his final resting place in the Kilchberg cemetery .
