life and career

Lily Gladstone was born and raised in the town of Browning, northwest of the state of Montana. It has indigenous roots in the Blackfeet , Nez Percé and Kainaiwa peoples . Her father studied at the University of Washington in the 1970s and ended up working as a television journalist. Her mother was a distant cousin of British Prime Minister William Ewart Gladstone . She lived in Montana until 13 and then moved to Seattle . After graduating from high school there, she attended the University of Montana - Missoula , from which she graduated in 2008 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Theater and also earned a further degree in Native American Studies. Then she was on the theaters of the USA nationwide. In her hometown of Seattle, she became part of Living Voices from 2009 to 2013, a teaching theater and a youth theater for indigenous Americans, the Red Eagle Soaring .

Gladstone landed one of her first film roles in 2013 in the French feature film Jimmy P. - Psychotherapy of an Indian , in which Benicio del Toro and Mathieu Amalric appeared, which was filmed in and around their hometown on the Blackfoot reservation. She advocates a stereotype-free role offer for actors who are descendants of Native Americans. Gathered from casting experience that the casting departments had little knowledge of the reality and diversity of Native Americans, Gladstone once considered turning his back on drama completely. Nevertheless, she sees the situation for actors with Indian roots as improved. In 2016, Gladstone was cast as Jamie for the film Certain Women directed by Kelly Reichardt . The film was shot again in Montana. For her portrayal in the film, she received the Los Angeles Film Critics Association Award for Best Supporting Actress. In addition, she was also nominated for the Independent Spirit Award .

In 2017, Gladstone was cast in the role of Lila in the adventure film Walking Out . In 2019 she played a supporting role in the drama First Cow . From 2019 to 2020 she played a small role as Roxanne on the Billions series .
